For the weekend that’s in it, I am writing about my Pride.
I am proud of how Ireland has moved with the times.
I am proud of how open & accepting we have become in recent years.
I am proud to see Rainbow flags flying.
I am proud of close family & friends who have opened themselves up to us as members of the LGBTQ+ community.
I am proud of the family members who accept & love their truth.
I am proud of family members who initially struggled, but who now accept & love them for it.
I am proud of all the voters who passed Marriage Equality legislation.
I am proud of all the couples who openly celebrate their love & take the plunge into marriage.
I am proud of how genuinely happy everybody at those celebrations are.
I am proud that we have a Pride festival.
We should all be proud of the progress we have made with our acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland. Needless to say, we aren’t all on board yet, and there are still issues to be addressed. But we are heading in the right direction.
I am hopeful that as my boys grow up, there will be even less stigma & stereotyping attached to people and their sexuality/gender.
We as parents are responsible for making this happen. It is up to us to teach our children about equality, and more importantly, to model it.
They need to know that they are growing up in a home & a community that accepts them no matter what. They need to know that they have parents and family they can turn to and be open with, no matter what.
We can make it happen. We are making it happen.
I am proud. I hope to be even more proud in the future.
